Fitted Wardrobes Cost UK (2026): Hinged and Sliding

By Gavin Rogers · Prices and rules checked 16 October 2026

The Short Answer

On our estimates, a three-door fitted wardrobe costs about £1,800 to £4,000 supplied and fitted, and takes 2 to 4 days. A two-door wardrobe is £1,100 to £1,400, sliding doors £2,000 to £4,600, and a wide six-door run £3,200 to £4,800.

The doors and what goes inside set the price. For less, a carpenter can fit flat-pack units into the space; for more, a bespoke maker builds to the inch.

Three ways to get fitted wardrobes

White shaker fitted wardrobes running floor to ceiling
  • Flat-pack, fitted by a carpenter. We estimate a three-section IKEA Pax with doors at £250 to £400, plus a carpenter at about £240 to £300 a day to customise it to the room. I'd say it's the cheapest route to a built-in look.
  • A carpenter's build. We estimate £800 to £1,400 in labour for a carpenter to build a fitted wardrobe; the totals above assume this kind of job.
  • A bespoke maker. We estimate £2,000 to £10,000 or more, depending on the length of the run, the internals, hardware and finish. Which?'s survey of its Trusted Traders in November 2025 put a bespoke three-door wardrobe at about £2,900 to £3,900 and a four-door at £4,900 to £6,200, depending on the quality. B&Q, IKEA and Howdens

Which? priced modular fitted wardrobes from four big retailers (B&Q, IKEA, Online Bedrooms and Wickes) in November 2025: a straight three-door run with swing doors averaged about £500 to £900 before fitting, from the cheapest doors with just a rail to mid-range doors with shelves and drawers, and a four-door run £600 to £1,000. It found prices similar across the four. Traders it asked quoted from about £1,000 to fit three doors and £1,500 for four.

  • B&Q: sells modular ranges and made-to-measure sliding doors through its partner Spacepro. When we checked in October 2026, Spacepro fitted them for a fixed £599 per wardrobe, subject to a survey, with a two-year guarantee on the fitting and installation usually within six weeks. Any electrics, plumbing or radiator moves and the old carpet have to be sorted before they arrive.
  • IKEA: Pax wardrobe frames start from about £250 (Which?). IKEA's assembly service through Taskrabbit started at £33 when we checked, priced by the products you buy, with fixing to the wall included. That assembles the units; making them look built in, fitted to the walls and ceiling, is a carpenter's job (above).
  • Howdens: only sells to the trade, so you buy through a builder or fitter, who prices the job. You can book a free design appointment, but it doesn't publish prices.

What moves the price

  • Length of the run and the number of doors.
  • The inside: fitting the same wardrobe out with shelves and rails rather than leaving it plain adds about £300, on our estimates.
  • Doors and finish: sliding, mirrored or painted doors cost more than plain hinged ones.
  • Hardware such as soft-close hinges and drawer runners.

Ask each quote to spell out the internals and the door finish, because those are where like-for-like comparisons fall apart.

Hinged or sliding doors?

Standard fitted wardrobes have hinged doors that open outwards; sliding doors save space in front but cost a little more (we estimate a three-door sliding wardrobe at a few hundred pounds more than hinged). Mirrored doors and other luxury finishes add more. I'd choose sliding doors where a bed or another piece of furniture sits close to the wardrobe, and decide the inside (rails, shelves, drawers) before the doors.

Alcoves and eaves

Wardrobes under sloping eaves in a loft conversion are priced individually: Andrew James Carpentry, for one, quotes them on application. For alcove cupboards in a living room, see alcove units; for a carpenter's day rate, see carpenter rates.

Rules come from the legislation and official guidance, read at source. Prices are our estimates: we check them against trade price data, retailer shelf prices and specialists' price lists, then build them up from their parts so the totals add up.
