The Short Answer
On our estimates, made-to-measure plantation shutters cost £150 to £350 per standard window fitted in faux wood, £300 to £600 in real wood and £120 to £280 in MDF. Five windows in faux wood is about £750 to £1,750.
By area, measured and fitted, that's about £390 to £530 per m². Fitting them yourself can save upwards of 40%, by B&Q's reckoning. Shutters are made to order, so allow time between measuring and fitting.

Bay windows

B&Q, which sells DIY shutters, says the cost of a bay depends on its size and the material, and puts a typical box bay at around 2m², which at our fitted per-m² estimate is about £780 to £1,050. Even so, for a bay I'd pay for a survey rather than measure it myself: shutters are made to your sizes, so a mistake is expensive.
What you get for the money
The point of shutters over blinds is control: B&Q says tilting the slats takes a room from full sun to a near blackout, and the movable slats suit street-facing rooms where you want privacy without shutting out the light. They're made to your measurements and stay put, so they're a semi-permanent fixture rather than soft furnishing. Cleaning is a wipe with a damp cloth.
Styles
- Full height: one panel covering the window top to bottom.
- Tier on tier: separate top and bottom panels that open independently.
- Café style: the lower part of the window only; smaller, so it costs less.
- Solid panels: no louvres.
Fitted or DIY?
B&Q, which sells DIY shutters, says measuring and fitting them yourself can save upwards of 40% on a measure-and-fit service, and that its partner's kits are designed for beginners. Measuring is the part that matters: shutters are made to your sizes, so a mistake is expensive. For a bay or anything out of square, I'd pay for the survey.

What are the downsides of plantation shutters?
