Roller Shutter Cost UK (2026): Security Shutters for Homes

By Gavin Rogers · Prices and rules checked 15 October 2026

The Short Answer

On our estimates, a made-to-measure security roller shutter for a window costs £600 to £1,500 fitted, and a shutter for a door or patio door £1,500 to £3,900. Size and electric operation push prices up, and published domestic prices are thin, so get several quotes.

On a house they're a serious security measure but a big change to how it looks, so I'd check planning first. And I'd never shutter a window someone may need to escape through without a way to open it fast from inside.

Choosing shutters

  • Solid or perforated: makers sell both; perforated slats let some light through.
  • Insulated: UK Roller Shutters describes its insulated shutters as typically foam-filled to cut heat transfer.
  • Electric or manual: electric costs more; ask what happens in a power cut.

Aluminium or steel?

For a house, I'd go aluminium. UK Roller Shutters, a maker, says aluminium shutters are lightweight, run more quietly than steel ones with less rattling, and generally resist corrosion better. It says its shutters are tested to British Standards and some models to Secured by Design, so if security is the point, ask whether the shutter you're quoted for has been tested and to what.

More than security

The maker also sells insulated shutters as a way to cut draughts, heat loss and noise, in solid or perforated versions, for windows, doors and garages. If you're mainly after privacy and shade rather than security, look at internal plantation shutters instead.

Getting a quote

  • Measure each opening, width by height in millimetres, so quotes are like for like; shutters are made to measure.
  • Say whether you want electric or manual operation for each one.
  • Ask how the shutter box fits. On a house that isn't built yet, some makers offer one built into the lintel.
  • Ask what happens in a power cut, and how an escape window can be opened from inside (see below).

Planning and fire safety

External shutters on the front of a house change its appearance, so check with the council: permitted development covers alterations only where the result is of similar appearance, and conservation areas and listed buildings are stricter.

On our estimates, £600 to £1,500 per window fitted, and £1,500 to £3,900 for a door or patio door.

How much do shutters cost for a 3 bedroom house?

For six windows, roughly £3,600 to £9,000 fitted, on our estimates; doors cost more each.

Are aluminium or steel roller shutters better for a house?

I'd choose aluminium: UK Roller Shutters says it's lighter, quieter and resists corrosion better than steel.

Do roller shutters keep heat in?

Insulated shutters are sold to cut draughts, heat loss and noise. Check the specification of the model you're quoted for.

Do I need planning permission for roller shutters?

It's worth asking: external shutters change the look of the house, and permitted development only covers changes of similar appearance. Conservation areas and listed buildings are stricter.

Can I have roller shutters on an escape window?

Only if it can be opened quickly from inside, including during a power cut. Otherwise leave that window unshuttered.
