The Short Answer
On our estimates, a removals firm charges about £790 to £950 to move a three-bed house locally, £330 to £450 for a one-bed and £1,000 to £1,200 for a four-bed. Moving 100 miles or more costs more. Packing is extra: about £400 to £500 for a three-bed.
Distance, how much you own and access at both ends move the price most. If there's a gap between moving out and moving in, storage adds a weekly charge.

The HomeOwners Alliance, using Reallymoving's figures, put the average for a three-bed within 25km at £792 when we checked in October 2026. Small local moves may be charged by the hour, about £50 to £80 for two people and a van on our estimates; bigger ones are usually a day rate or fixed price.
Packing, dismantling and the extras

| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Packing, 3-bed house | £400 to £500 |
| Unpacking, 3-bed house | about £200 |
| Dismantling and reassembling furniture | about £125 on average |
Packing a one-bed costs about £250, a two-bed £325 and a four-bed £600, on our estimates. Other extras to ask about:
- Packing materials. Boxes, tape and bubble wrap aren't always included.
- Crating for antiques, artwork or electronics.
- Special equipment, such as a lift through an upstairs window for furniture that won't go down the stairs.
- Insurance upgrades for valuable items.
- Waiting time and late keys. Delays on the day can add hourly charges, and cancellation charges are often non-refundable.
Storage between moves
If you can't move straight in, many removers will store your things. When we checked in October 2026, Bournes, a remover in the South East, charged from £24 a week for a one-bed's contents up to £60 a week for a four-bed, with extra charges if you need to get at your things during storage. The HomeOwners Alliance suggests comparing the remover's storage quote with local self-storage; your remover can take everything to the storage site. A man and van can do the second leg if it's a small load.
What affects the price
- Distance between the two homes.
- How much you own.
- Access: parking, upper-floor flats and difficult access can all push the price up.
- Time of year: removers are busier in summer, especially August.
What the quote should include
A removal company should normally visit your home first, then send a written quotation. A good quote makes clear the labour, the vehicle size, how long the move should take, whether packing and dismantling are included, the insurance cover, any mileage charges, and what's excluded.
The HomeOwners Alliance adds questions to ask:
- Can I book provisionally and pay once I've exchanged? It advises against booking and paying until you've exchanged and have a completion date, though some firms want a deposit.
- What happens if my moving day changes?
- Do you have storage if my onward move is delayed, and what does it cost?
- What are the insurance limits for single items and in total?
Choosing a remover
The HomeOwners Alliance suggests checking whether a firm belongs to the British Association of Removers (BAR) or offers dispute resolution through the Ombudsman, plus independent reviews and trading history. BAR members are audited every year against its membership criteria and code of practice, and its consumer code has had Trading Standards Approved Code status since 2008.
BAR also says that taking money in advance is standard practice in removals, and that its Advance Payment Guarantee protects that payment if a member gets into financial difficulty and can't carry out your move. It runs a free, independent dispute service too. I'd get three surveys and favour a BAR member for anything bigger than a flat.
