Editorial policy

What we publish, how we check it, and what we won't do. How the prices themselves are worked out is on how we price jobs.

Every claim has a source

Before a page is written we research the whole job first: the official rules, makers' and trade bodies' guidance, and what the trade price guides say. Each page has a written list of every claim it makes, tagged with the source it came from. That covers prices, but also how long a job takes, what a quote should include and what a certificate covers. A claim we can't trace to a source we've read doesn't go on the page. The official and industry sources behind a page are listed at the end of it with the date we checked them; the trade price guides we only compare our estimates against are kept in our research notes rather than listed.

What counts as a source

Rules come from the law and the official bodies. Practical guidance comes from trade bodies, manufacturers and the specialists who do the work. Prices are checked against retailers' and firms' own published prices and the trade price guides. We don't use sites that publish rates or costs without data of their own, or comparison sites that only pass enquiries on.

Our estimates, labelled as ours

Price tables show our own estimates, built from two or more sources and labelled as our estimates. We don't copy another site's price table. Where we quote a retailer's, council's or official body's published price, we say whose it is and when we checked it. We name another price guide only to correct a figure we think is wrong, and say why.

Keeping it current

Every page shows the date its prices and rules were last checked. Figures are kept in one place, so when a price or a rule changes it changes on every page at once. An automated check refuses to publish a page that cites a source we haven't re-checked in 120 days.

Independence

No tradesperson, manufacturer or retailer pays to appear in a guide or to change what it says. We're paid when a tradesperson buys a quote request through MyJobQuote, and that never affects the prices we publish. See how we make money.
