The Short Answer
On our estimates, fitting a gas hob in place of an old one costs about £75 to £150. If the gas pipe has to be extended or rerouted to reach it, allow £150 to £300. Most standard jobs take one to two hours.
Retailers' fitting services sit within that range. Whoever does it must be Gas Safe registered, and it's worth checking the worktop cut-out is the right size before they arrive.
Gas hob fitting prices
| Job | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Replace a gas hob, like for like | £75 to £150 |
| Fit a gas hob with new pipework | £150 to £300 |
| Gas Safe engineer, per hour | £40 to £80 |
| New gas point | £200 to £400 |
Retailers' fitting prices
When we checked in October 2026, Currys charged £130 to install a gas hob and AO £135. If you're buying a new hob and the gas point is already where it needs to be, I'd book the retailer's fitting with it; if the pipe needs moving, get a local Gas Safe engineer to quote for the lot.
Safety and certificates
- Fitting or disconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer: it's the law, not advice. Ask for their Gas Safe ID card: the back lists the kinds of gas work they're qualified for. See checking a gas engineer.
- Gas hobs aren't notified under building regulations. Gas Safe Register says you can ask for a voluntary Declaration of Safety certificate.
- The carbon monoxide alarm rule for new gas appliances doesn't apply to cooking appliances, but Gas Safe Register recommends a yearly safety check of all your gas appliances.
Before the engineer comes

AO's installation page sets out what its engineers need, and it's a useful checklist whoever you book:
- the space around the hob clear of switches, cooker hoods and anything flammable, including cupboards and wallpaper;
- at least 75cm between the hob and the cooker hood or ceiling above;
- direct ventilation from the room to the outside;
- an existing gas supply to connect to, and a socket or cooker switch within 1.5m;
- credit on a prepayment meter, because the gas is tested before and after.
It also won't fix an existing gas leak, and will only adjust a wood or laminate worktop. I'd check the new hob fits the existing cut-out, and ask for the price with and without taking the old hob away.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install a gas hob?
On our estimates, about £75 to £150 like for like, or £150 to £300 with new pipework.
How long does it take to install a gas hob?
Most standard jobs take one to two hours.
How much does Currys charge to fit a gas hob?
When we checked in October 2026, £130.
Can I install a gas hob myself?
No. Gas work, including fitting a hob, must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer by law.
Are gas hobs being phased out?
No law bans them. The government's Future Homes Standard, published in March 2026 and in force in England from 24 March 2027, is about low carbon heating and energy efficiency in new homes, and its consultation response doesn't regulate cooking. A gas hob in an existing home can still be replaced like for like by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
