Cost to Fit Internal Doors UK (2026)

By Gavin Rogers · Prices and rules checked 16 October 2026

The Short Answer

On our estimates, having an internal door hung costs about £70 to £200 per door in labour, or £120 to £350 supplied and fitted with a standard door and handles. Replacing every door in a typical house (say eight) is about £960 to £2,800.

Hanging a new door in an existing, sound frame is the quick job; new frames, non-standard sizes and fire doors cost more. An experienced joiner can fit several doors in a day.

Internal door prices

Our estimates, including VAT where charged, from JELD-WEN's guide, checked against trade price guides.
ItemTypical cost
Hang a door, labour only£70 to £200
Door supplied and fitted, with handles and hinges£120 to £350
Handles and hinges, per door£20 to £100
Carpenter, per day£250 to £320

Choosing the door

JELD-WEN, the door maker, sets out the options and their typical prices:

  • Hollow core doors are the budget option, from about £30, and lightweight.
  • Solid core doors are more durable and insulating, from about £60.
  • Fire doors range from about £50 to £300 or more.

It recommends 3 hinges per door for stability and durability, and puts fitting labour at about £70 a door on average, plus a bit more to take the old door off.

Its other price points: glazing adds about 30 to 40% to many door styles; pre-finished doors (factory painted or stained) cost more than unfinished ones you paint yourself; and doors bought in bundles are often cheaper than buying them one by one. If you're doing the whole house, I'd buy unfinished doors in a bundle and have them painted with the rest of the decorating.

What's included, and what's extra

A fitting price usually covers trimming the new door to fit the existing frame (within reason) and minor adjustments to the frame. These are extra:

  • repairing existing door frames;
  • replacing or altering frames;
  • fire door certification or specialist compliance work.

Quotes often assume standard-sized doors and frames in good condition, so I'd send photos of any odd-sized or tired frames before you get a price. JELD-WEN gives the same advice: frames that aren't square mean the new doors need trimming, so tell the joiner up front.

When you need fire doors

In England, when a loft conversion creates a storey more than 4.5m above the ground, Approved Document B asks for fire-resisting doors (at least E 20) on the escape route, upgrading existing doors where necessary. Fire doors cost more, and I'd use a carpenter who's fitted them before. See loft conversion fire safety.
