Satellite Dish Installation Cost UK (2026): Freesat and Sky Dishes

By Gavin Rogers · Prices and rules checked 16 October 2026

The Short Answer

On our estimates, a satellite dish supplied and fitted for Freesat costs about £150 to £280, wall-mounted with a cable to one room. Each extra room is £60 to £150. A wall-mounted dish usually takes one to two hours; roof and chimney mounts cost more.

Realigning a dish that's been knocked (£50 to £100) is much cheaper than replacing it. Most houses in England can have a dish without planning permission, within size limits.

Wall, roof or chimney?

A satellite dish on the side wall of a house
  • Wall: the usual and cheapest choice, often at the back of the house, at a height that gives a clear line of sight to the satellite. Usually one to two hours.
  • Roof: sits higher, which can get above trees or neighbouring buildings, but takes longer, especially on a steep or high roof.
  • Chimney: fixed with a lashing kit, a strap round the stack, rather than drilled fixings. That's the correct method: drilling into a chimney risks damaging it.
  • Motorised dish: turns to pick up several satellites for international channels, and costs more to fit.

No signal? Check these first

Before paying for a new dish, it's worth knowing the two cheap fixes. A dish knocked out of line by wind needs realigning (£50 to £100 on our estimates). And if you're getting no signal or it keeps dropping out, the LNB, the part on the end of the dish arm that receives the signal, is often the cause, and it can be swapped without replacing the dish.

I'd ask any installer to check alignment and the LNB before quoting for a new dish.

Do you need planning permission?

Not usually, on a house in England. A dish is permitted development as long as:

  • there are no more than 2 dishes or antennas on the house and in its grounds;
  • a single dish is no more than 1m across (with two, only one may be over 0.6m);
  • on a chimney, it's no more than 0.6m across and doesn't stick up above the chimney;
  • it doesn't sit higher than the roof (or, with a chimney, higher than the chimney or 0.6m above the ridge, whichever is lower).

In a conservation area, National Park or other protected area, it can't go on a chimney, wall or roof slope that faces and can be seen from a road. These rights don't cover blocks of flats, so ask the council there.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a satellite dish?

On our estimates, about £150 to £280 supplied and fitted, with one room connected.

Can a satellite dish be moved?

Yes, for about £120 to £250 on our estimates, as long as the new spot has a clear line of sight to the satellite.

Do I need permission for a satellite dish?

Not usually on a house in England, for up to 2 dishes no more than 1m across. In a conservation area it can't face, and be visible from, a road.

Why has my satellite dish lost signal?

Often it's been knocked out of line by wind, or the LNB on the end of the arm has failed. Both are cheaper to fix than a new dish.

Can a satellite dish go on a chimney?

Yes, fixed with a lashing kit strapped round the stack rather than drilled into it. It costs more than a wall mount because of the work at height.

How long does a satellite dish installation take?

Usually one to two hours for a wall-mounted dish.

Is Sky getting rid of satellite dishes?

For new customers, it's moving away from them. When we checked in October 2026, Sky's website said Sky Q, its satellite box, was no longer available to buy online, and offered Sky Stream instead, which streams over broadband with no dish. Freesat still uses a dish, so a new dish mainly makes sense for Freesat or an existing satellite service.
