Mural Painting Cost UK (2026): Hand-Painted Wall Murals

By Gavin Rogers · Prices and rules checked 16 October 2026

The Short Answer

On our estimates, a hand-painted mural costs about £300 to £800 for a small design, £850 to £2,000 for a whole feature wall, and £1,000 to £2,500 for a room with several walls painted.

Artists price by the size, the detail and the design time, usually as a fixed price that includes the design, paint and travel. A simple design can be done in a day; a detailed one takes far longer.

How mural artists price

When we checked in October 2026, the mural artists we read priced in tiers:

  • a partial feature, such as a nursery scene or a single motif, from a few hundred pounds;
  • a statement piece across a wall, with some background left plain;
  • a full scene covering the wall edge to edge;
  • several walls or a whole room at the top.

Joanna Perry Murals works to a fixed price that includes the digital design mock-ups, materials and travel, so the price doesn't change if the painting takes longer. I'd ask for that, and for a mock-up to approve before any paint goes on the wall.

How long it takes

Paint Prestige Murals says a small child's bedroom mural might take a day, while a full wall in a restaurant or office takes several. We estimate one to three days for a simple design and two to four weeks for an intricate one of the same size. Detail, more than size, sets the time.

Extras, and cheaper alternatives

The costs that can sit on top of the painting itself:

  • preliminary sketches and design;
  • repairing or re-plastering the wall first;
  • a base coat;
  • a clear topcoat or varnish to protect the finished mural.

Spray-painted murals can cost up to 50% more than hand-painted ones, on our estimates. If you want the look without the commitment, printed designs on paper, fabric or vinyl go on like wallpaper and can be peeled off later. For a wall that needs repairing first, see plastering costs.

Children's rooms and finishes

Most of the published examples we read are for children's bedrooms and nurseries: themed characters, jungles, underwater scenes or space. A protective finish is available as an optional extra from Paint Prestige Murals, for one, which is worth having on a wall that small hands will touch. For plain walls and woodwork in the same room, see decorating costs (a typical bedroom is £300 to £500).
