Shed Installation Cost UK (2026): Base, Build and Supply

By Gavin Rogers · Prices and rules checked 15 October 2026

The Short Answer

On our estimates, a medium shed (around 8ft x 6ft) supplied, built and on a new base costs about £850 to £1,400. If you've already bought it, assembly alone is £150 to £900 depending on size; a concrete base is £60 to £80 per m² and a slab base £40 to £70. Including the base, most sheds take one to two days.

Keep it under 2.5m high if it's within 2m of a boundary, and behind the house, and it usually won't need planning permission.

The base

A timber shed on a paving slab base

B&Q's shed base guide covers four kinds of base: timber, plastic, paving slabs and concrete, each made a little bigger than the shed so water drains away. Uneven ground has to be levelled first, which adds to the cost. For a concrete base, see concrete bases.

Who puts it up

Some retailers sell installation with the building: Wickes, for example, offers fitting on some large garden buildings, carried out by the makers Mercia, Shire and Forest. Otherwise a gardener, handyman or landscaper can build it, and a shed retailer's own fitting service is another option.

Planning and building regulations

  • A shed behind the house is permitted development if it's single storey, no more than 4m high with a dual-pitched roof (3m otherwise), 2.5m within 2m of a boundary, and buildings don't cover more than 50% of the garden.
  • Under 15m² with no sleeping accommodation, it's exempt from building regulations.
  • Listed buildings, flats and some designated areas are stricter: see garden room planning.

Frequently asked questions

How much would it cost for someone to put up a shed?

On our estimates, about £150 to £900 to assemble a shed you've bought, depending on size, or £850 to £1,400 for a medium shed supplied, built and on a new base.

How much does it cost to install a shed?

About £700 to £1,100 for a small shed and £1,200 to £2,000 for a large one, supplied with a base and built, on our estimates.

What is the 4 year rule for sheds?

It was the old 4-year time limit for planning enforcement against building works. From 25 April 2024, it's a single 10-year limit in England, so a shed built without the permission it needed can be enforced against for longer.

Do I need planning permission for a shed?

Not usually. Keep it single storey, under 2.5m high within 2m of a boundary, and behind the house.

How long does it take to put up a shed?

One to two days including the base; a concrete base needs time to cure before the shed goes on.

Does B&Q install sheds?

B&Q doesn't publish a shed fitting price. When we checked in October 2026, its website pointed customers to NeedHelp, an online platform it partners with, where local tradespeople quote for jobs including shed and garden assembly. Compare their quotes with our assembly estimate of £150 to £900.
